READERS' CHOICE MOST INNOVATIVE GREEN INITIATIVES BY A CONVENTION CENTER C I O CONVENTION CENTER: ANAHEIM CC LOCATION: ANAHEIM, CA WEBSITE: www.anaheimoc.org WHY THE CENTER IS INNOVATIVE: Through energy efficiency, recycling programs and food sustainability, the Anaheim Convention Center, the largest LEED-certified convention center in the West, is truly a ringleader in green leadership. Energy efficiency: The Anaheim Convention Center has the first and largest grid connec- tor solar power generating system in Anaheim, generating 140,000wkh of electricity a year. Plans are also in place to install an additional 1.5-megawatt rooftop solar array in late 2012. Recycling Programs: The Anaheim Conven- tion Center has an on-site recycling center with modern equipment to recycle everything from plastic to discarded electronics and cardboard. This "Green-Zone" also includes on-site compost- ing for food scraps and turns them into rich concentrated soil used to enhance the city's plants and flowers. Food Sustainability: Environmental Steward- ship is a way of life at the Anaheim Convention Center's partnering food company, ARAMARK. Their eco-friendly menu includes sustainable cuisine selections; the most notable is the ARA- MARK owned sustainable cattle at Hearst Ranch. All utensils, cups and serving plates are biode- gradable. Food, wine and cheese are purchased locally, and there is even a chef's garden on the rooftop of the Anaheim Arena, where fresh vegetables and herbs are grown year-round. With a skylight covering the length of the building, it was constructed at an angle to track the sun all day, taking full advantage of the light. Today, the rest of the roof is completely covered with one of the largest single-roof solar systems in the country, which provided 28% of the facility's energy in its first year of operation. Energy use has also been reduced through lighting retrofits, new door and air curtain installations, replacement of older video sys- tems with LED video displays, and large fans to circulate the heat and air more efficiently. Recycling efforts go far beyond the standard paper, cardboard, glass and plastic consumer items. Several tons of shrink wrap from packag- ing and boat wrap from a boat show have been recycled, along with more than 47,000 pounds of carpet, more than 2,000 pounds of wooden pal- lets, some 5,500 pounds of electrical equipment, recyclable cartridges from soap dispensers, computer equipment, lamps, ballasts, batteries and excess building materials. Getting to Atlantic City and getting around can be green, too. The Atlantic City Rail Line is located at the Convention Center, and the city's convenient 13-passenger jitney buses run on natural gas. Frontier Center is one part of the Wisconsin Center District complex, which also includes the Milwaukee Theater and the U.S. Cellular Arena. That means sustainability efforts in one building are likely to be adopted by the other facilities in the district, as well. These efforts in recent months have included infrastructure upgrades — including low-flow re- stroom fixtures, efficient lighting, and an HVAC system that has trimmed power consumption by some 10%-15%. Leftover food is handled under partnership that includes the center's caterer, Levy Restaurants, and Waste Management, Inc. The high-profile presence the Wisconsin Cen- tral District has in downtown Milwaukee has also given sustainability a "bully pulpit" that is being used to encourage the neighboring businesses surrounding the convention center to ramp-up their own green efforts and make the city even more attractive to environmentally minded meeting planners and show organizers.
