CONVENTION CENTER: CONVENTION CENTER: LOCATION: GEORGIA WORLD CC ATLANTA, GA WEBSITE: www.gwcc.com WHY THE CENTER IS INNOVATIVE: The Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC) is committed to sustainable practices and lever- ages technology to reach this goal whenever possible. Taking a comprehensive look at daily operations of the 3.9 million square foot facility, recent sustainable innovations include: y The GWCC's Public Safety department uses T3 Motion Vehicles, clean-energy three-wheeled vehicles, for patrolling the 200-acre campus. All-electric, zero gas emissions, high efficiency, T3 vehicles reduce the use of car patrol and over all fuel usage. y Exhibit hall lighting upgrade, which will result in up to 25% energy savings per usage and will last 20% longer than old lighting. y iPads are utilized campus-wide to dramatically reduce the use of paper in planning events. y Digital monitors reduce the use of vinyl signage and printed materials that end up in the landfill post event. y Ionators reduce the use of cleaning chemicals. y Upgrades to toilets and urinals significantly reduce water usage. Old toilets used 3.5 gallons of water per flush and new toilets use 1.28 gallons. Urinals used 3 gallons per flush and now use 1.28 gallons. y Robotic floor cleaners have HEPA filters that improve air quality within the center. The center and its adjacent Lucas Oil Stadium offer show organizers a lot of space, but also requires that the building management tailor its green initiatives to not only trade shows, but major sporting events as well. Among the first steps was to align operations with the Enhanced Sports Stadium Recycling Program, which identifies materials that can be recycled from large-crowd events. "Green correctness" can also serve to raise the aware- ness among attendees about the virtues and availability of recycling their trash. The result has been the recycling of about 14 tons annually of drink containers alone, and designated partners for the recycling of paper, pallets and other materials that add to the recycling totals. The complex also has an up-to-date infra- structure that serves to keep a lid on water and electricity consumption. There is also a conveniently placed bus stop at the front door to transport visitors to and from the airport via public transit. The Orange County Convention Center's (OCCC) new sustainability coordinator will work directly with show organizers to help put the center's comprehensive green programs in place during a show's run. The coordinator will also work with show managers on special requests such as carbon offsets. The position consolidates the OCCC green efforts into one centralized location, improv- ing in-house coordination and spearheading applications for various certifications that both improve center operations, but also provide evidence to its customers that the OCCC is as much green as it is orange. The OCCC already has some impressive top- tier sustainability credentials. The center has earned the prestigious LEED designation for existing buildings and was the first convention center in the U.S. to obtain ISO 14001 certifica- tion for its Environmental Management System and its recycling of 71% of dry waste.
