MONTH IN REVIEW TSE Honored by ASBPE for Editorial Excellence Oceanside, CA – ASBPE, the association of professional editors and writers working on B-to-B publications, announced July 25 that Trade Show Executive won the Gold level 2012 Azbee Award/Western region. TSE was honored for its original research on trade show compensation trends in the article, What's in Your Wallet?, which was published in the December 2011 issue. Te award-winning article was a joint collaboration of Darlene Gudea, president; Danica Tormohlen, contribut- ing editor; Kathleen Maloney, creative director; and Exhibit Surveys Inc., an independent research company that conducted the survey. Tere were nearly 1,500 entries in the award competition which was judged by the quality of writing, reporting and edit- ing; development of the subject; and pre- sentation and value to readers. Te judges included experienced business editors, designers, consultants and academicians. Tormohlen accepted the Gold Award at the Azbee Awards Banquet today in Kansas City, MO. In addition, Tormohlen gave a presentation on "How to Create an Award-Winning Article Using Original Research" at the event. "Tis award is the most prestigious acknowledgement that an editor's and designer's work has met the highest standards of excellence," said Darlene Gudea, president, Trade Show Executive Media Group. "Te association's competi- tion, which is one of the largest for U.S. business publications, is extremely com- petitive, and we are honored to have our research and writing recognized as one of the best in B-to-B publishing." Te culmination of six months of work, the Trade Show Executive Trade Show Com- pensation Trends Survey provided a unique perspective on compensation plans. Traditional surveys generally reveal salary levels at that point in time, and most likely have little bearing on future compensation in a changing economy. TSE asked senior executives — those who control the purse strings — to look at their budget plans for the upcoming year and give TSE readers a heads up on likely headcount, projected salary increases and perks for 2012. Te feature article, com- piled in 2011, included charts and graphs with key components of 2012 compensa- tion plans, projected staffing levels, plans for hiring or downsizing, new methods for rewarding top performers, expected cost increases for insurance, trends in employee benefits three years from now, and more. Te survey was sent to nearly 2,000 show managers selected from TSE's rich database. In addition to analyzing the survey data, TSE culled audited data from IRS return forms to give readers the actual salaries and bonuses of senior management of the largest association- managed trade shows and reviewed the financial statements of the handful of publicly traded companies in the indus- try to provide actual salaries of their top executives. Finally, TSE interviewed lead- ing trade show executives and HR profes- sionals to offer some additional insights and perspective to the quantitative data.
