TSE DASHBOARD SPONSORED BY June Dashboard Metrics Fairly Flat; Q2 Sees Growth BY DARLENE GUDEA, president; CAROL ANDREWS, editor-at-large, and HIL ANDERSON, senior editor Oceanside, CA – Trade shows reported only modest growth in June, but that did not derail a continuing upward momen- tum for the year. All three metrics in the Trade Show Executive (TSE) Dashboard of Monthly Trade Show Metrics finished June in the black, although the growth rate was no more than 2% for any of them. At the same time, June wrapped up a Second Quarter that was more robust with the metrics all topping 2% growth. A total of 21 shows were surveyed for the Dashboard, but the largest of the lot, Canada's Farm Progress Show, was leſt out of the adjusted June totals because 60% of the 1.2 milllion sf of exhibits were outdoors. Te adjusted totals, sans the big farm equipment show in Regina, worked out to a growth in exhibit space of 1.8%. At- tendance and the number of exhibitors both increased 2.0% over June 2011. Exhibit space for June totaled 2,943,341 net square feet (nsf). Attendance totaled 317,708 and exhibitors reached 18,115. On a per-show basis, June shows aver- aged 147,167 nsf, 906 exhibitors and 15,885 attendees. June contributed to a Second Quarter in which exhibit space grew 3.4% over Q2 2011, exhibitor count was up 2.1% and attendance took an encouraging step up of 4.6%. Nine of the 21 shows surveyed were more than 100,000 nsf in size, and six were featured in the most recent TSE Gold 100 rankings of largest U.S. exhibi- tions. Two were also on the TSE Fastest 50 roster of fastest-growing shows. Eight of the 21 shows were either un- changed or experienced growth in all three metrics, but three saw decreases across the board. Jewel of a Show Te largest show included in the adjusted totals was JCK Las Vegas, which covered 501,000 nsf in its second year at the Man- dalay Bay Convention Center. Te floor space was actually 282 square feet smaller than it was in 2011; however, the exhibi- tor roster was up 3.5% to 2,599. Mandalay Bay was also buzzing away from the show floor. A component of the show known as Swiss Watch had 30 high-end watch brands setting up shop in suites at the hotel properties on the Mandalay Bay campus for invited buyers. Attendance also grew. JCK Events/ Reed Exhibitions reported 22,227 attendees, up 5.7% from 2011. Show managers were encouraged by the increased presence of attendees from Asia, Europe, Latin America and India. Growth Leaders y Te Great West Truck Show. Te Las Vegas trucking exhibition continued the growth spurt that landed it on the TSE Fastest 50. Exhibit space jumped 28.1% to 66,400 nsf. Show management, Randall- Reilly Business Media, added a pre-show Booth Bling. All that glitters was found at JCK Las Vegas. Growth in floor space was flat, but there were more exhibitors and attendance showed a solid 5.7% growth. Continued on page 26 24 August 2012 | Trade Show Executive
