Avoiding Hazards Organizers can address social media issues in proactive ways, according to Terrence Canela, general counsel at the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. He provided webinar participants with a three-pronged pro- gram to address potential problems: y Develop guidelines governing the use of company equipment and help separate personal and business uses; y Create policies governing how and when social media is used by your orga- nization and how you want the group to be perceived through social media; y Communicate with staff and members about how they use social media for busi- ness as the basis for a workable policy. "Policy should be a live document, not something that's filed away and forgot- ten," he said. Social media policies also should be reviewed by legal counsel, protect con- fidential information and define what is confidential in your business, Canela said. "Tech and social media are here to stay and need to be addressed," he said. Taking these steps toward an integrated social media plan is likely to help organi- zations address social media issues in a sensible manner.
