LOOKING AHEAD What Major Trade Shows are on Tap for December? I/ITSEC 2012 DECEMBER 3-6 Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, FL Increasing sophistication in computer- simulation technology and greater reliance on simulators in military training is expected to drive heavy attendance at I/ITSEC, the world's largest modeling, simulation and training conference. Last year, the show drew a record crowd of about 20,000 attendees to 590 exhibiting companies. Te crowd was heavy on military and defense industry representatives, including 2,000 visitors from 56 different nations registrations. Organizers from the National Train- ing and Simulation Association have been successful at accommodating the growing relationship of the simulation industry and the video game sector, which includes a niche known as serious gaming. Tese games are not for kids, but rather to assist with military training. I/ITSEC will again feature its popular Serious Games Competition and Challenge contest, which launched in 2005 and en- joyed a spike in entries last year. Finalists are grouped together in a pavilion on the show floor where their creations gather a great deal of attention among potential customers. Another entire pavilion is being dedicated to healthcare simula- tions, including lifelike dummy patients that are used to train medical personnel. Planning for I/ITSEC 2011 was over- seen by a team from the U.S. Army. For 2012, the Navy and Marine Corps will be in the lead. Te 2011 meeting drew 22,000 attend- ees and was the largest since the record 2008 gathering in Chicago. Sue Deveaux, the event manager from J. Spargo & Associates, said space sales in September had topped 109,000 nsf, surpassing the 2011 Atlanta show total of 106,000 nsf. Meeting managers made a number of tweaks to the schedule to accommodate an increasing volume of new research for presentation, and to address feedback from attendees. Te schedule includes an extended number of oral presentations taking place on Saturday and Sunday. ASH is also using the meeting to rally members interested in adding their voice to the association's outreach to Wash- ington. Te Sunday Grassroots Network Lunch, formerly a breakfast, was added to the schedule as a networking forum for hematologists interested in advocat- ing policies that will affect the specialty. "Drinks with 19,000 of Your Closest Friends," but had to be changed this year to 20,000 to reflect the growing number of friends and colleagues who are attend- ing PennWell's energy exhibition. "Our attendees rated networking as one of the top reasons to attend the event so we've focused on increasing networking opportunities over the last few years," said Stephanie Moore, marketing lead for the show. "Last year we provided an offsite networking event at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas and it was oversold with attend- ees standing in line waiting to get in." POWER-GEN takes place this year in Orlando and is expected to draw more than 20,000 attendees and 1,200 exhibi- tors. Exhibit space is expected to easily top 400,000 nsf. Exhibitors were given a discount for space if they were advertisers in PennWell's Power Generation magazine or exhibit at other smaller events in the POWER-GEN portfolio. Power companies were also offered a deal that would enable them to send an unlimited number of attendees for one set fee. POWER-GEN also includes the co-located shows NUCLEAR POWER International, POWER-GEN Financial Forum and Renewable Energy World North America. Attendees will have unlimited access to all four shows, giving them more opportunities to meet colleagues without having to stand in line for the main bash.
