INTERNATIONAL CHINA IBTM Study Sees More Show Launches in Asia Beijing – Event organizers that do business in Asia are expected to remain bullish in the coming year with more launches planned, according to the fourth annual IBTM Global Meetings Industry Research report for China and the rest of Asia, just released. Te study found that 62% of the event organizers ("buyers") surveyed plan to expand their portfolios in the coming months. Only 25% said their show schedules would remain unchanged. Marketing budgets will remain strong. Nearly half of the respondents — 48% — revealed that their marketing budgets would increase in the next 12 months, while 31% said such budgets would hold steady. Te top destination among the respondents was China. Te top five industry sectors served by events this year included government & administration; financial, banking & insurance; utilities; electronics & commu- nications; and pharmaceuticals & medical. Te report, compiled for Reed Travel Exhibitions by Sally Greenhill, of Te Right Solution, surveyed 579 profes- sionals, including 332 buyers and 247 suppliers. Of those surveyed, 77% were from Asia and 23% were from outside the region but organized events in Asia. When asked which factors which would impact the events industry, the most frequently cited responses were the global and local economy; air fare increases and currency inflation; increased demand and the burgeoning industry in China; prod- uct and destination development; staffing requirements; and creative new ideas. Te organizers of the 112th edition of the sprawling exhibition placed a 2-hour 12 October 2012 | Trade Show Executive limit on its free broadband service to prevent visitors from logging on and remaining logged on all day, which leſt a good number of people unable to get online at all last year. Te new program requires users to log off when they aren't using their comput- ers or they will be automatically charged for usage aſter two hours. Te organizers also cautioned wireless was not always available in some parts of the fair venue, and heavy usage could cause broadband speeds to slow down. Te October 27-30 show at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong anticipated a crowd similar to the 8,400 attendees who registered in 2011 and got a firsthand look at a wide array of products, services and technolo- gies for the huge Asia market. Eco Expo Asia benefitted from a five- year plan implemented by the Chinese government that included environmental protection among its pillar industries. Te investment in the sector over that period is estimated to reach $73 billion. Tat emphasis has made China a key market for companies worldwide that sell products that make the greening of Asia possible. Last year's Eco Expo Asia featured pavilions from the United States, Great Britain and other nations. Te 2011 crowd of 8,400 attendees was up 5% from 2010. Te 296 exhibitors marked an 8% increased from 2010. Marintec China Te organizers of the show — Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council — reported participation by foreign exhibitors and dozens of Asia government officials has been steadily on the rise and should en- sure a good crowd for this month's event. Reach Hubert Duh, executive director, Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd., at (852) 2802 7728 or Hubert.duh@hongkong. messefrankfurt.com Rising Tide Lifts Prospects for Marintec China Shanghai – UBM Asia has a tough act to follow as it prepares for Marintec China 2013 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Te 2011 edition of the bien- nial event directed by UBM experienced a significant increase in the number of ex- hibitors, attendance and exhibit space. Te show spanned 70,000 square meters, 40% larger than the 2009 event. Attendance was nearly 51,000 in 2011 and the exhibi- tor count grew to more than 1,650. Te Chinese government has helped set the stage for another year of solid growth. Beijing launched a new five-year plan that emphasizes the development of the nation's Offshore Engineering and Equipment sector, which puts Marintec on course for a big crowd and big show floor. Te selling point for the show has been the increased concentration of the global shipbuilding industry into Asia in general and China in particular. Te importance of the Chinese market was illustrated last year when Germany hosted more than 100 companies at its national pavilion.
