READERS' CHOICE MOST INNOVATIVE GREEN INITIATIVES BY SHOW MANAGEMENT C I O ORGANIZATION: CONSUMER ELECTRONICS ASSN. WEBSITE: cesweb.org/CES-Greening.aspx WHY SHOW MANAGEMENT IS INNOVATIVE: Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) made great strides in physically "greening" the 2012 International CES®. We produced 190,000 badge holders made from recycled vinyl banners from the 2011 CES. Nearly 11,000 of these badges were recycled and will be repurposed for a third life — to make badges for the 2013 CES. Both of our on-site press rooms housed paperless exhibitor press kits, meaning exhibi- tors hosted press kits on USBs, CDs or URLs. We transitioned to Falconboard, a 100% paper- based graphic board made from renewable resources, for all indoor directional signage. After the 2012 CES, we collected materials from the show floor to repurpose and give back to the local community. We increased our overall reuse/recycle rate to 75%, up from 74% in 2011. The 2012 CES show floor itself highlighted the benefits of green initiatives. Our Sustain- able Planet TechZone featured the latest in eco- friendly products and energy efficiency tech- nologies, highlighting the latest products that make it possible for everyone on this planet to live sustainably. The GoElectricDrive TechZone showcased a full range of high- and low-speed electric vehicles, energy storage devices and charging solutions, highlighting an area of great potential and growth for the industry. Show management launched a public pre-show campaign to drum up contribu- tions to help pay for the purchase of power generated from renewable sources. In the case of Outdoor Retailer, the goal was to run the show on the equivalent of 100% wind power. For the end user, electricity from green sources is no different than the energy pro- duced by traditional fossil-fuel power plants. The only difference is in price, and the cost of buying green electricity is generally higher than that produced by burning coal or natural gas. It would be tempting to rely on standard power to run a trade show in the name of keep- ing utility costs down; however Nielsen took an aggressive approach and asked participants in the show's Green Steps program to pony up for the purchase of carbon offsets worth more than 739,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. While it sounds a bit complicated, carbon offsets are the same as buying wind power from the Salt Lake City power company and in effect cut the amount of carbon produced show by roughly the same amount of carbon found in nearly three rail cars full of coal. VOTE FOR COMPANY ID: GI-SM-NELSN ORGANIZATION: SCIGEN TECHNOLOGIES WEBSITE: www.eposterslive.com WHY SHOW MANAGEMENT IS INNOVATIVE: At medical/scientific meetings, poster presen- tations are an integral part of the education program. Presenters prepare printed posters and bring them to the meeting. The posters are pinned to presentation boards. At the appointed time, a small group of interested colleagues gath- ers around the presentation board as the author describes his/her research. Environmentally, the paper/ink waste generated by this traditional system is enormous, because following the meeting, the posters are typically discarded. Enter the ePosters Live suite of products. Introduced in the U.S. in October of 2011, the technology is an environmental game changer. Before the meeting, authors easily create their posters electronically using Poster Genius and then submit the posters electronically. At the meeting, the poster area is attrac- tive, modern, and takes considerably less floor space than paper posters. Electronic posters are keyword searchable at workstations. The presentations are scheduled throughout day using large screen monitors. Following the meeting, posters are archived on-line indefinitely so there is no waste. The ePosters Live suite of products is a win-win-win solution for meeting organizers, presenters, and the environment. VOTE FOR COMPANY ID: GI-SM-SCIGN R A E D R E ' S C E H
